Northern Utah Based
Built to Hold. Built to Last
What We Build
We're a Layton-based crew with more than 10 years in the ground across Northern Utah. A K&K wall isn't just a pile of rocks thrown together. Our retaining walls are built around your site to hold soil back through wet springs and hard winters.

We Know Local Ground
What Northern Utah Ground Does To A Retaining Wall
Our soil and weather are hard on walls. We plan around three things on every job.
01
Clay That Swells and Shrinks
Much of the valley floor sits on silt and clay left behind by ancient Lake Bonneville. Utah Geological Survey mapping shows expansive soils in places along the Wasatch Front. When that clay gets wet, it swells. When it dries out, it shrinks. That push and pull wrecks walls that were built without drainage. We put drainage rock and drain pipe behind every wall, so water moves away instead of building pressure.
02
Steep Bench Lots
Bench lots in Ogden, Layton, Kaysville, Bountiful, and Cache Valley drop off fast. Tall and tiered walls need real excavation, a compacted base, and rock that locks together. Not rock that's just stacked.
03
Freeze-Thaw Winters
The ground here freezes and thaws over and over. Box Elder County's building criteria, for example, use a frost depth of 30 inches. Water in the soil expands as it freezes and pushes on everything around it. We size the base, the drainage, and the rock to ride that out, season after season.
Our Process
How We Build A Rock Retaining Wall
We follow the same process on every job to ensure a smooth build for us and for you.
1. Site visit & clear quote
Rock walls blend seamlessly into Utah landscapes while adding structure and beauty.
2. Locate utilities underground
Blue Stakes marks buried lines before anything gets dug.
3. We excavate the area
Our own crew digs to the right depth.
4. Compacted base
A solid base keeps the wall from settling.
5. Rock placement
Each rock locks in, with a slight backward lean (called batter) for strength.
6. Drainage & backfill
Drain rock and pipe go in behind the wall.
7. Cleanup & use
We leave the site clean and ready for your enjoyment.
*Most residential walls take a few days to a week, depending on size and site access.

Know Before You Dig
Permits, Engineering, and Blue Stakes
Permits
Many Utah cities require a permit and engineered plans for walls about 4 feet tall or taller. Bountiful, for example, requires a permit at 4 feet or taller. A shorter wall that holds up a driveway, a building, or another slope can need engineering too. Rules change from city to city, so check with your city building office. We'll tell you what to expect for your project.
Blue Stakes
Utah law requires you to call 811 before you dig. It's free. Call at least two full business days ahead. Hand tools only within 24 inches of the marks. We make sure this gets done before our equipment touches the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rock Retaining Walls
A: K&K Rock does. We're based in Layton and have more than 10 years of experience building rock retaining walls for homeowners, builders, and contractors across Northern Utah. We handle the excavation and the wall with one crew.
A. Cost depends on wall height and length, the kind of rock, how easy the site is to reach, and how much excavation is needed. Steep lots usually cost more than flat yards. Because every site is different, the best way to get a real number is a site visit. We give free, straight quotes. Call 801-498-0132.
A: Often, yes, once a wall reaches about 4 feet. Bountiful requires a permit at 4 feet or taller, and walls that hold up a driveway, a structure, or another slope can need engineering at any height. Each city sets its own rules, so check with your city building office. We'll walk you through what your project needs.
Yes. Utah law requires you to contact Blue Stakes of Utah by calling 811 before you dig. It's free. Make the request at least two full business days before digging. Crews must hand dig within 24 inches of the marked lines. We make sure locates are done before we start.
A: Well, when they're built right. Clay swells and shrinks with moisture, and frozen soil pushes on a wall. A compacted base, drain rock and pipe behind the wall, and rock that locks together let a wall handle both. Skipping drainage is the top reason walls fail here.
